The Oklahoma Bermuda Lawn Calendar

Bermuda does not need the same work every month. Use the lawn’s growth stage, weather, and condition to decide what matters now.

01

Spring: wake-up and weed pressure

As soil and air temperatures rise, Bermuda begins moving out of dormancy. Early spring is the time to separate dormant color from actual damage and to avoid forcing growth before the lawn is ready.

Pre-emergent timing, mowing setup, irrigation checks, and the first feeding decision should respond to conditions—not simply the calendar date.

  • Check irrigation before summer demand arrives
  • Begin mowing when active growth warrants it
  • Identify cool-season weeds before choosing control

02

Summer: growth, mowing, and water

Bermuda is most active in warm weather. Consistent mowing and deep, appropriate watering generally support density better than irregular extremes.

Heat stress, poor coverage, compaction, dull blades, and insect or disease pressure can look similar from a distance. Diagnose the pattern before adding more water or product.

  • Adjust mowing to growth instead of habit
  • Watch for repeated dry patterns that suggest coverage issues
  • Avoid treating every brown area as the same problem

03

Fall: protect the progress

Growth slows as temperatures fall. The goal shifts from pushing appearance to protecting the lawn, reducing avoidable stress, and planning ahead for winter weed pressure.

Fall is also a useful time to review drainage, irrigation, compaction, and thin areas while the season’s patterns are still visible.

04

Winter: dormancy is not failure

Healthy Bermuda naturally loses green color during dormancy. Limit traffic where the soil is wet or frozen, keep leaves and debris from smothering the surface, and use the quiet season to plan spring corrections.
