Identification

Two primary species cause problems in the Oklahoma City area. Knowing the difference matters because they breed in different conditions and require different control strategies.

  • Culex quinquefasciatus: dusk/dawn biter, tan-brown coloring, breeds in stagnant water, primary West Nile vector
  • Aedes albopictus (Asian tiger): distinctive black and white stripes, aggressive day-biter, breeds in tiny amounts of standing water
  • Both species: 1/4–3/8" long, females only bite (require blood for egg development)
  • Resting habitat: dense shrubs, groundcover, under decks, shaded foundation plantings
  • Flight range: Culex up to 2 miles; tiger mosquito typically stays within 100–300 yards of its breeding site
West Nile Virus Is Real in Oklahoma

Daytime Biting Activity
